John Garnsey - Sport Builder - 2011

John Garnsey’s lifelong career in the ski industry began in the 1970s at Waterville Valley Ski Resort in New Hampshire. In 1974, he moved to Vail and was responsible for various mountain operations at Vail and Beaver Creek. Garnsey transitioned to the Vail Valley Foundation as vice president, and later as president, heading numerous successful campaigns to bring premier worldwide events to Vail/Beaver Creek, including the 1989 and1999 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships and 1994 World Mountain Bike Championships.In May of 1999, Garnsey became executive vice president and chief operating officer of Beaver Creek Resort, and was instrumental in establishing the resort as providing arguably the best guest service in the ski industry and the finest safety culture, earning recognition from NSAA. Garnsey was appointed co-president of Vail Resorts in 2008, overseeing both Vail and Beaver Creek. A recent crowning achievement, Garnsey co-chaired the committee that secured the winning bid for the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships.
